Altered Book Journal - A New Page

I recently finished another page for my Altered Book Journal.  This new chapter is a "fairy tale".

For this project, I wanted this one very thick page to appear that it was a book within a book. 

Twenty-five pages were glued together and then a rectangle was cut through all the pages with a craft knife to create a dimensional box.  Mona Lisa was altered to create a full window.  The bottom of the window was accented with a border from Embellishments and the top with a hand-crafted, semi-circular piece of altered chipboard.   The completed frame was attached with dimensional foam to give the window box additional depth.

The glue applied to each page was kept away from the edges so when the book is closed the pages keep the appearance of being individual single sheets.  

Gilded page corners were trimmed from white cardstock and colored with Metallic Rub-Ons and Golden Glitz ink.

In keeping with the theme of royal fairy tale renaissance, deep purple and green ribbons were affixed over a stamped border from Lace Delight.  Tiny pearl stickers were used as jewels.

The main body of the page was created with layers of Gesso, acrylic paints, and chalks and stamped with Brick Wall, Dots in Space and Love Chapter.

The facing page will be finished to coordinate and contain personal journal notes.

Altered Book Journal - Table of Contents

After altering the cover of my book, I have ventured inside to start renovations. 

 

When reading, I love opening the cover of a book and seeing the table of contents.  These short lines of text always tease me and heighten my curiosity of what is to come in each chapter.  That feeling inspired the first page of my journal.

When the small piece of artwork is opened to the left, it reveals a hidden tag tucked in a vellum pocket.

Several pages were removed from the book to provide additional space before the dimensional artwork was built on one of the text pages.  

The tag can be pulled from the pocket for an interactive element.

The pages removed from the book are saved to provide materials for upcoming mixed media projects.  In this instance, the "Contents" from one of the pages was trimmed, matted and added to my page.  

Here is a little more detail about each piece.....

Sweet Dahlia was stamped on white cardstock in Onyx Black VersaFine and heat embossed with clear powder.  The image was colored with Copics.  The decorative band is a piece of Rose Garden cardstock stamped with Verdant in Love Letter Memento.  The smaller band is Inspiring stamped on white cardstock with Olive Grove Memento and colored to match with Copics.

A second flower was stamped, colored and trimmed for a dimensional element.  Tip/Hint:  Offsetting the flower while adhering with dimensional foam adds more visual depth to the overall image. 

The cream card base was stamped inside on the left with Glory of Modesty in Wheat VersaMagic and  edged with Delicata Golden Glitz.

A shipping tag was trimmed and distressed with Peanut Brittle Memento.  Learn, Live, Hope was stamped  with Onyx Black VersaFine and heat embossed with clear powder.  This piece was matted with Rose Garden stamped with Verdant in Love Letter Memento.

The back of the tag was stamped with one of the images from the Charms set and a date was hand printed.

New Year....New Projects!

Happy New Year!

I am excited to venture into another year and the all the creative possibilities it has to offer.  I am looking forward to working on more mixed media and altered art projects.

The newest adventure will be an altered book journal.




This is the before photo.  My husband had two of the same book and shared the extra copy with me.  I am in the process of deconstructing, reconstructing and transforming it into a mixed media journal.  

No themes, no guidelines, no "have-to's" just lots of happy, colorful exploration!

I will post pictures as sections are completed.  At the moment, the cover is getting a whole new look.
