Scary Sweet Trick-or-Treat

Masks are great costume accessories, but for me they are more fun for inking techniques!

I used several to create this spooky 6 ½" square scene with all new Penny Black Halloween stamps.

For the moon, I used two masks – a regular and a reverse.  The regular mask was a circle to protect the moon as I added in the sky background and the reverse mask was the leftover piece after the circle had been removed.  This allowed me to fill in the desired colors for the moon while protecting the background.

This picture helps illustrate the masks created from Judi Kins Eclipse Tape which is a thin, repositionable adhesive paper.

Long horizontal strips of the tape were also used to mask off sections for the grass (another new Christmas background) and street as well.

If you would like to see an older Halloween design that contains a quick masking video, please click "here".

VersaMagic inks were used to create all the background features.  These opaque pigment inks blend beautifully and have wonderful deep, rich colors.  Next I stamped and embossed the tree and then created the dimensional elements for the scene.

With the added layers, the trick-or-treater looks like he is really wearing the costume.

Here two haunted houses were layered.  With the windows removed from the top house, you can see the interior glow colored on the back layer.

Then the images on the tree were “popped”.

The Transparent set “Halloween Treats” has a terrific border that works great for a fence and includes the banner, bat and candy corn – not to mention some really cool Halloween cupcakes!

I am still deciding if this will become a large card or if I will add some decorative ribbon to create a seasonal wall hanging.

All these images and more will be available at the end of August so keep your eyes peeled for these spooky designs.

I hope you have enjoyed this week of Halloween fun at my studio as well as the daily inspiration on the Penny Black Blog.

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for visiting!
